November 2016 Challenge – Photo at 5:55pm Each Day

Background:

I just bought a new, sweet Canon camera, the first nice camera I have ever had and the first camera I have owned in over a year. It was in preparation for a long-awaited trip to Antarctica, and despite knowing absolutely nothing about how to use it I was very excited to experiment with my new toy. To help with this, Jen challenged me to take a photo every day at 5:55pm.

The Month:

It didn’t matter where I was, I had to stop and snap a photo each day at 5:55pm. To accomplish this I set an alarm on my I-phone for this time (it was a duck’s quacking sound) and when it went off I took my photo. This resulted in some cute moments as twice I was at work administering a diagnostic exam when the alarm went off. It always resulted in a laugh and everyone was quite happy to snap a photo for me after I explained what I was up to.

The challenge started off pretty well. For the first 11 days I took a photo each day. I used my I-phone, not the new camera, just because I never knew where I was going to be at 5:55pm and because it was more convenient given my alarm was also on my phone. Then, something magical happened which completely destroyed my challenge… I went on vacation!

Successful?

No, I failed, haha… however, this was a wonderful failure. Beginning on the 12th I took off for a two and a half week vacation to Argentina and Antarctica (!!!). I had been planning this trip since February 2016 and I was super excited about it. I often did not have internet access and given the adventurous and varied nature of my trip often did not have my phone on me. I also hardly had a clue of the day and time as I did not carry a watch and the sun did not set until super late, if not at all while in Antarctica. I was living in the moment, and did not care much about time or date. It was liberating and freeing. So, I happily lost this challenge… and while my photos may not have been at 5:55pm each day, I’m pretty sure that the photos I got throughout this trip more than make up for the failure.
